Welcome to the Northview High School Band website!
Located in Johns Creek, GA, the NHS Band program serves approximately 220 students (the largest band program in all of Fulton County!) in three concert bands, percussion ensemble class, marching band and jazz band under the sole direction of Mrs. Kelly Dickerson. The bands are now housed in a beautiful facility, Zervakos Hall (named in honor of founding principal, Peter F. Zervakos) which was completed in February 2014 with over 10,000 square feet of spaced dedicated solely to the band, divided in to a 5,000 sq ft rehearsal room, three practice rooms, the Gregory Canty Memorial Music Library, an instrument repair room, full instrument storage as well as director offices.
Students are all personally auditioned by Mrs. Dickerson annually to assure they are placed in an ensemble with peers who share their skill level. “Mrs. D” believes that all students have a ‘place at our table’ of music education and that no student should sit in band class either bored or lost. Music selections, method book selections and music theory lesson plans are all tailored to fit the needs of each group. Mrs. D strives to encourage students to become lifelong learners as well as develop an appreciation for performing arts both as the performer and the audience member. All concert bands perform at the annual GMEA Large Group Performance Evaluations in the spring as well as perform on four concerts throughout the school year. Students are also given the opportunity to work with professional musicians in master classes and mini-camps held throughout the school year.
Mrs. Dickerson also strives to give Northview band students as many extra-curricular band experiences possible through trips and community performances. Past destinations have included performances in Washington, D.C., the Champs Sports Bowl, the Russell Athletic Bowl, UGA JanFest premier ensemble (2009), UGA High School Marching Band Day, GSU High School Marching Band Day, Character Parade in Magic Kingdom (WDWR) in Orlando, FL (2016) and the Universal Studios Sound Foley Experience in Orlando, FL (2018.)
The students in the NHS band are consistently selected for Fulton County Honor Bands & Orchestral Winds, District V Honor Band, GMEA All-State Bands, GHP Music Majors, AYSO, MYSO, NAfME All-National Band as well as finalists in NAfME Student Composition Competition.
In the Northview program, your student can be as involved as they would like – our marching band is non-competitive and audition-only. The NHS Orchestra also invites our wind and percussion students in to their classroom twice a year to perform full-orchestra selections on the Winter and Spring concerts. The school chorus is also invited in to perform with the band at the fall concert.
Thank you for taking time to visit our site. Thank you to the students, parents, alumni and all who support our band program!
